At the crossroads of East and West, in the heart of the
Mediterranean, overlooking one of the most beautiful bays in the
world, the Bay of Kotor, lies the town of Herceg Novi, immersed in
its luxurious vegetation. Surrounded by walls and six-century-old
fortresses, Herceg Novi speaks with its history, culture,
fascinating nature and splendour. Its streets, built in 1382,
testify about many nations and civilizations that left deep traces,
which made Herceg Novi a place of intertwining cultures and
traditions.
The Sun shines more than 200 days per year over its squares, steps
and gardens making it a city of a highest average temperature on the
Adriatic coast.
The hinterland of the Herceg Novi municipality, 50km long, with
pebble and therapeutic beaches, with sea-bathing cliffs, bordered by
pine and olive trees, tamarisk, cradles a string of romantic
Mediterranean villages, where even today they produce olive oil in
old mills, and keep the bearberries’ brandy in taverns. They produce
home-made cheese and the most traditional smoked ham called “Prsut”.
The slopes of the Orjen mountain dominate above the city. February
is an interesting month in the area. Snowy peaks of the Orjen make a
fantastic background for the traditional mask-carnival and flower
festival performed on the coast, while the performers are enjoying
the cuddling of the warm air at the average temperature of 18
degrees at this time of the year.
The landscape of the city, besides the Mediterranean flora, included
more than 250 types of exotic plants brought from different
continents, which makes Herceg Novi a unique botanical garden.
